A Reflection on Purpose, Possibility, and the Future of Our Family

In the previous post, we reflected on a simple but powerful truth:

We already have what we need.

We have a strong foundation.

We have a rich history.

We have people with wisdom, experience, knowledge, and talent.

We have family members who care.

We have people willing to contribute.

We have people willing to serve.

We have people willing to help.

The question is no longer whether we have enough.

The question is:

What can we build together?

🏗️ Every Great Structure Begins with a Plan

Builders do not begin with walls.

They begin with a vision.

Before the first board is cut or the first nail is driven, someone must answer a simple question:

What are we trying to build?

The same is true for our family reunion.

If we hope to strengthen what has weakened, restore what has been damaged, and preserve what we value, then we must have a clear picture of the future we are working toward.

Fortunately, that picture may already exist.

đź“– Our Purpose Provides the Blueprint

Article 1.2 of the Rufus Biggs Family Reunion Bylaws states that our reunion exists to:

Unite

Support

Educate

the descendants of Rufus Biggs Sr. through organized gatherings, shared resources, and programs that strengthen family bonds and preserve our legacy.

Those three words are more than a mission statement.

They are a blueprint.

They provide direction.

They provide purpose.

They help us evaluate whether our efforts are producing the kind of family culture we hope to leave behind.

🤝 Unite

Unity is more than occupying the same space.

People can sit in the same room and still feel disconnected.

True unity is built through relationships.

It grows through conversations.

It develops through trust.

It deepens when people feel seen, heard, valued, and included.

A healthy reunion creates opportunities for family members to move beyond introductions and truly connect with one another.

Not just for a weekend.

But in ways that strengthen relationships long after the reunion ends.

❤️ Support

Support is love put into action.

It is encouragement during difficult seasons.

It is listening without judgment.

It is sharing wisdom, resources, and experiences that help others navigate life’s challenges.

A healthy reunion creates opportunities for family members to encourage one another, learn from one another, and remind one another that no one has to walk through life alone.

📚 Educate

Education is more than learning family history.

It is the sharing of knowledge, experiences, skills, and wisdom that help others grow.

Every family contains teachers.

Every family contains lessons.

Every family contains experiences that can benefit future generations.

A healthy reunion creates opportunities for those lessons to be shared.

Not because one generation has all the answers, but because every generation has something valuable to contribute.

🌳 What Could This Look Like?

Imagine family members gathering in smaller groups during the reunion.

Children learning through age-appropriate activities.

Youth engaging in conversations that prepare them for the future.

Adults discussing real-life challenges and opportunities.

Family members sharing experiences, lessons, and encouragement.

Knowledge being passed from one generation to another.

Relationships forming across branches of the family that rarely interact.

The reunion would still be a reunion.

But it would also become something more.

A place where connections deepen.

A place where support grows.

A place where learning happens naturally.

A place where family bonds become stronger.

🌟 Building Something Worth Passing On

The purpose of these conversations is not simply to improve a weekend gathering.

It is to strengthen the family that gathering represents.

Every generation inherits something.

Every generation leaves something behind.

The question before us is simple:

What kind of family experience do we want future generations to inherit?

If we remain committed to uniting, supporting, and educating one another, we have an opportunity to build something that is both meaningful and lasting.

đź’ A Question Worth Considering

As you reflect on our family reunion, consider this question:

How can each of us help create a reunion that unites, supports, and educates future generations?

Because we already have what we need.

Now it is time to decide what we will build together.
